Renowned evangelist Helen Ukpabio, the visionary behind Liberty Foundation Gospel Ministries in Calabar, Cross River State, has sparked controversy with a bold declaration aimed at Nigerians.

In a fiery sermon that went viral, she issued a stern warning against using the phrase “happy birthday,” labeling it as “the devil’s language.”

During the service, the influential preacher revealed her unconventional approach to celebrating her own milestones—instead of marking birthdays, she calls it “thanking God at 60.”

“I don’t celebrate birthdays yearly like a zombie,” she declared. “I refuse to sell my soul to the devil with such phrases. You won’t hear ‘birthday’ in my vocabulary—only ‘thanking God.’”

“People mindlessly chant ‘happy birthday!’ But who is giving you this ‘happy’ and ‘birthday’? These are modern-day idolatrous greetings,” she continued passionately.

“Even Christians sing ‘happy birthday’ from the pulpit, then claim it means nothing. It does mean something. If you lack spiritual discernment, don’t utter such words.”

“These traditions are Satan’s trap—a language the Bible warns us against adopting.”
