Francis Nwifuru, the Governor of Ebonyi State, has commended Blessing Ejiofor, the basketball sensation from Ebonyi, for her role in Nigeria’s victory at the 2025 Afrobasket Women’s Championship.
To honor her achievement, the governor gifted her ₦30 million in cash and a duplex at tlan Estate in Abakaliki. Ejiofor hails from Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Nwifuru made the announcement during a reception held for the athlete at the Government House in Abakaliki on Friday.
The Governor lauded her accomplishments, calling her a distinguished representative of Ebonyi State.
He emphasized that her participation in the continental tournament was significant, as it showcased Ebonyi’s sporting talent on an international platform.
“I felt disappointed during the last AFCON because Ebonyi had no representation,” the Governor said.
“However, my joy was restored when I learned, while overseas, that an Ebonyi athlete contributed to Nigeria’s triumph in this championship. This fulfills one of my long-standing hopes.”
The Governor acknowledged that Ejiofor’s rise to the national team was challenging but underscored her perseverance and divine favor.
He praised her for motivating young athletes and assured continued state support for sports development.
Responding to Ejiofor’s appeal, the governor approved ₦50 million for the Ministry of Sports to build a modern basketball court for male and female players in the state.
“Our reward system is effective, and we must celebrate you,” the Governor stated.
“You didn’t just represent Nigeria—you brought honor to your home state. We pray for God’s grace to empower you for greater accomplishments in the future.”, the governor added.
Blessing Ejiofor played a key role in Nigeria’s Afrobasket championship win, reinforcing the nation’s supremacy in African women’s basketball.
