Germany’s dominant 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao in their World Cup opener sent shockwaves through the tournament, but skipper Joshua Kimmich warned against premature celebrations, insisting tougher challenges lie ahead.
The resounding victory propelled the four-time champions to the top of Group E alongside Côte d’Ivoire, who edged Ecuador 1-0 in their first match.
Germany are gearing up for a high-stakes clash against the Ivorians next, followed by a final group-stage showdown with Ecuador—matches Kimmich believes will reveal the team’s true potential.
At a post-match press conference, the midfielder acknowledged the emphatic scoreline was unusual at this level, describing the performance as “clinical but not conclusive.” He stressed that while the result was impressive, replicating such dominance against stronger opposition remains uncertain.
While Germany dismantled tournament newcomers Curaçao, other heavyweight nations faced surprising struggles—Spain were held by Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia snatched a point against Uruguay, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the competition.
Eager to erase memories of their early eliminations in 2018 and 2022, Germany entered this campaign with a 10-game unbeaten streak. However, Kimmich remained pragmatic, stating that real tests await in facing physically driven sides like Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador.
