Lagos State has applauded the family of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti following his historic posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, calling the recognition a defining triumph for African cultural expression.
The musical revolutionary became the first African recipient of this esteemed accolade during the Grammy Special Merit Awards event held on January 31, 2026, in Los Angeles.
His children – Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti – proudly accepted the award on behalf of the Kuti dynasty, representing their father’s enduring legacy on the global stage.
In an official statement, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, hailed this achievement as a watershed moment that underscores Fela’s worldwide musical and sociopolitical impact.
The commissioner emphasized that this honor transcends personal recognition, serving as a symbolic victory for Lagos State’s cultural prominence and Africa’s creative renaissance.
“This groundbreaking accolade reaffirms Lagos as Africa’s cultural capital and testament to our city’s ability to produce revolutionary artists who shape global consciousness,” Benson-Awoyinka remarked.
She highlighted how Fela’s musical innovations permanently altered the world’s perception of African artistry while creating a cultural movement that continues influencing global pop culture decades after his passing.
The commissioner further stressed that this Grammy recognition validates the state government’s ongoing initiatives to preserve Fela’s cultural capital and invest in Lagos’s creative economy.
“Through his prophetic lyrics and revolutionary sound, Fela became Africa’s musical freedom fighter – challenging dictatorships, corruption, and neocolonialism while celebrating African identity,” she added.
Noting the continued resonance of his discography worldwide, Benson-Awoyinka observed that Fela’s creative activism remains as relevant today as during his lifetime.
The Kuti family described the award as an emotional milestone that transcends generations, seeing it as global validation of African cultural production and a vindication of Fela’s visionary artistry.
