Nigeria is mourning the loss of former international footballer and ex-Super Eagles winger Okwuchukwu Waobikeze.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, in a Facebook statement on Monday, July 14.
The statement revealed that the late footballer died peacefully around 7:34 pm Central Standard Time.
“The Waobikeze family announces the peaceful departure of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze to eternal glory. He passed at approximately 7:34 pm CST,” the statement read.
“We are grateful for all the prayers, calls, and visits during his lifetime. Funeral arrangements will be shared later.”
“Kindly uphold our family in your prayers as we prepare to bid farewell to our beloved brother. Thank you all.”
Affectionately called ‘Babaoo’ by supporters, Waobikeze was celebrated for his exceptional left-wing prowess and powerful left foot.
He left a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s football scene, representing clubs such as Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC).
His passing comes shortly after another former Super Eagles star, Peter Rufai, who captained the team and was the standout goalkeeper in the 1990s.
