Efe Irele

Actress and filmmaker Efe Irele has emphasized the need for a better balance in Nigeria’s film industry, urging creators to produce movies that captivate audiences both emotionally and commercially.

In a recent discussion with Saturday Beats, Irele praised the strides made by Nigerian filmmakers while highlighting the importance of financial viability for the industry’s future.

“Filmmakers are doing incredible work, raising the bar every day. While we need more stories that touch the heart, we can’t overlook the significance of commercial success. After all, the industry must sustain itself financially,”
she explained.

She also observed that the rise of streaming platforms has significantly influenced audience preferences, reshaping the way stories are told.

Irele noted that filmmakers must now craft experiences compelling enough to draw viewers away from their homes and into cinemas.

“With streaming dominating, fewer people feel the need to visit cinemas. We must create films that entertain, relax, and bring joy, as that’s what audiences are increasingly seeking,”
she added.

Nevertheless, Irele emphasized the importance of preserving powerful, thought-provoking narratives that resonate deeply, ensuring the essence of filmmaking remains intact.
