Renowned filmmaker Mildred Okwo has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry by hinting that the ongoing Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards could mark the end of an era for the prestigious event.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if this turns out to be the final AMVCA ceremony,” Okwo speculated in a candid social media post.
These comments emerge amidst growing uncertainty about the awards’ financial sustainability, particularly following MultiChoice’s recent corporate restructuring and shifting strategic priorities in content distribution.
The acclaimed director, known for her sharp industry insights, suggested that new ownership might prioritize revenue-generating ventures over high-cost award productions.
“Corporate investors typically expect rapid returns,” she explained in a follow-up post. “An elaborate awards show with massive production costs may struggle to justify its budget under fresh leadership.”
This development coincides with MultiChoice’s aggressive push to transform its streaming platform Showmax into a dominant force in Africa’s increasingly competitive digital entertainment landscape.
Preparations are currently underway for the grand finale on May 9, where winners across various categories will be unveiled following the conclusion of public voting.
In an official statement, Africa Magic expressed gratitude to the passionate fans who participated in shaping this year’s outcomes through their votes.
“The voting window has officially closed!” the announcement read. “Your enthusiastic support for your favorite nominees has been incredible. Now the anticipation builds for the big reveal on awards night.”
The ceremony will feature a star-studded red carpet event beginning at 4:00 p.m., followed by the main show at 7:00 p.m. WAT, broadcast across Africa Magic channels. This year’s edition boasts 32 competitive categories, blending audience choices (11 categories), expert jury selections (18 categories), and three prestigious special recognition awards.
Notably, veteran thespian Joke Silva assumes the role of Head Judge for 2026, taking over from Femi Odugbemi, while the introduction of new regional categories aims to enhance the event’s continental representation.
The entertainment giant’s recent acquisition by French media powerhouse Canal+ has fueled additional speculation about potential changes to MultiChoice’s programming strategy.
Industry analysts suggest this corporate transition may accelerate the company’s digital transformation, potentially reallocating resources from traditional television events like the AMVCA to digital-first content initiatives.
