FIFA has come under fire for what critics describe as a disrespectful snub toward Lionel Messi during the recent World Cup, sparking outrage among Argentine media.
The decision to award Spain’s Rodri the Golden Ball—given to the tournament’s best player—instead of Messi has ignited fierce backlash, with many arguing the Argentine icon was more deserving.
Messi’s dream of securing a second World Cup title was dashed when Argentina fell 1-0 to Spain in a tense final, failing to record a single shot on target in regulation time.
The match took a grim turn for Argentina after Enzo Fernández’s late red card left them with ten men, and Ferran Torres sealed Spain’s victory with an extra-time winner.
Spain’s triumph marked their first World Cup win since 2010, with their squad also sweeping individual honors—Rodri claimed the Golden Ball, while Pau Cubarsí and Unai Simón earned other accolades.
However, Argentine journalist Antonio Serpa of TyC Sports blasted FIFA’s decision, calling it a “heartless oversight” to overlook Messi, who delivered eight goals and four assists in what was likely his final World Cup.
Serpa contended that while Rodri played a pivotal role in Spain’s victory, Messi was the tournament’s emotional and competitive centerpiece, captivating fans worldwide with his unmatched skill and passion at 39.
He further criticized FIFA’s selection criteria, pointing out that Rodri failed to score or assist throughout the tournament despite his high passing accuracy, while Messi’s influence was undeniable.
“Football is about moments, magic, and goals—not just possession,” Serpa argued, suggesting FIFA missed an opportunity to honor a legend who transcended the sport.
