FIFA confirmed that South Africa has a chance to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup if they overcome Nigeria in today’s qualifier.
The global football authority shared this update in a post on X.
The post stated: “Two more teams could book their @fifaworldcup 26 tickets today!
“Egypt will advance with a win over Burkina Faso, while South Africa progresses if they defeat Nigeria and Benin fails to beat Lesotho.”
Currently, South Africa tops Group C with 16 points, holding a six-point lead over Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
FIFA has yet to rule on South Africa’s alleged use of an ineligible player against Lesotho in March.
Teboho Mokoena was fielded despite carrying a suspension after accumulating two yellow cards.
Lesotho has formally protested, seeking a forfeit victory and a three-point deduction for South Africa.
