Super Eagles

In a landmark move, the Nigerian government has delivered on its pledge to gift houses to the Super Eagles squad for their impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured a silver medal after a hard-fought tournament.

The long-awaited ceremony took place in Fez, Morocco, organized by the National Sports Commission (NSC), just ahead of Nigeria’s first match in the 2025 AFCON campaign.

Under the leadership of former coach Jose Peseiro, the Eagles reached the 2023 final but suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against host nation Ivory Coast in a thrilling encounter that extended into extra time.

Upon their return, President Bola Tinubu decorated the players and officials with national honors, including the Member of the Order of the Niger, while also announcing plans for residential property rewards that have now materialized nearly two years later.

The fulfillment of this promise comes at a pivotal moment as the team, currently managed by Franco-Malian tactician Eric Chelle, prepares for their tournament opener against Tanzania in Group C.

“Through the NSC, the Federal Government has now fully honored its 2024 commitment to provide housing rewards for the Super Eagles’ AFCON achievement,” confirmed team spokesperson Promise Efoghe through the squad’s official media channels.

Senior officials including NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and Senate Sports Committee Chairman Abdul Ningi verified that the national honors had been properly categorized as MON or OON, complementing existing recognitions held by some players.

The officials further disclosed that all property allocations and land grants authorized by President Tinubu have been formally processed, with accompanying Certificates of Occupancy duly issued to recipients.

With Chelle at the helm, the three-time continental champions enter the tournament seeking redemption after narrowly missing World Cup qualification, drawn in a challenging Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and their opening opponents Tanzania.

After Tuesday’s Tanzania clash, the Eagles will face Tunisia on Saturday before completing their group stage campaign against Uganda the following week.
