The family of the late gospel artiste Omije Ojumi has addressed recent speculations, clarifying misconceptions about her burial plans and urging the public to disregard false narratives circulating online.
At a solemn service of songs held in Lagos, the family reiterated their commitment to giving Omije a befitting farewell, free from external interference.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved, Mr. Femi Eretan, the late singer’s brother-in-law, denied rumors of discord within the family and dismissed claims that they sought financial assistance from the gospel music community.
“Contrary to misleading reports, we stand as one united family,” Eretan affirmed, emphasizing that exaggerated external reactions only added unnecessary distress.
He recounted how initial discussions with artistes, led by family head Mr. Wale Akinaanu, proposed a swift burial due to emotional and health considerations.
However, further deliberations revealed the need for a more structured arrangement, honoring Omije’s legacy as a wife, mother, and respected artiste.
Eretan revealed attempts to engage with the artistes’ representatives were met with resistance, culminating in a breakdown of communication.
An elderly member of the group reportedly dismissed further involvement, forcing the family to take full charge of funeral preparations.
The family also condemned a viral video by an alleged prophet falsely accusing them of soliciting funds for the burial, threatening legal repercussions if evidence is not provided.
“Baseless defamation cannot go unchallenged—we demand accountability,” Eretan declared.
Though attendance from fellow artistes was sparse, the family acknowledged those who paid their respects, maintaining gratitude for their solidarity.
As tributes pour in, the family remains focused on preserving Omije’s memory with the dignity she deserves.
