Tensions escalated into violence at the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday as opposing factions clashed over control of the party, prompting police to intervene with teargas.
Reports indicate that the unrest erupted when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State arrived at Wadata Plaza alongside Kabiru Turaki, the newly appointed PDP National Chairman.
Their presence sparked heated confrontations with police and supporters backing Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction, who attempted to prevent their entry into the party headquarters.
Security personnel aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the governors engaged in a tense standoff, leading authorities to deploy teargas to disperse the crowd and regain control.
Makinde managed to enter the premises with Taofeek Arapaja, the newly elected National Secretary, while Wike remained in his vehicle for over half an hour without stepping out.
Meanwhile, supporters of Anyanwu’s faction resisted attempts by Makinde and Mohammed to take charge, resulting in chaotic scenes outside the PDP secretariat.
Following the clashes, Makinde and Mohammed addressed the media, detailing the police response and the hostility they faced from opposing party members.
Authorities later ordered all individuals to vacate the premises to restore order, leaving the situation unresolved as tensions persist within the party.
