President Bola Tinubu has honored former Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong with the prestigious Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) award.

The celebrated defender received official confirmation on Tuesday, following a prior announcement, and shared his elation over the prestigious recognition.

In a heartfelt statement, he extended his appreciation to the President, calling it an immense privilege for both himself and his loved ones.

“Deeply humbled and grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT), for bestowing upon me the esteemed MFR national honor.

“Today, the official certificate arrived, marking an unforgettable milestone in my career and personal journey,” he remarked.

At 32, Troost-Ekong acknowledged Nigeria’s pivotal role in shaping his identity and fueling his achievements.

“This nation has been my foundation, granting me purpose and a stage to realize my footballing ambitions.

“Representing the green and white has always been a sacred duty—one I’ve embraced with unwavering dedication,” he affirmed.

“As the Super Eagles embark on their AFCON campaign today, my full support is with the team.

“I have unwavering faith in their potential and the greatness they can bring to our nation,” he continued.

The accompanying certificate, signed by President Tinubu, reads: “By the authority vested in me under Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in acknowledgment of your exemplary service and contributions to our nation, confer upon you the title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), with all its accompanying dignities and privileges.”

Troost-Ekong led Nigeria to a historic second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire before retiring from international football.
