Super Eagles

In an unexpected tactical decision, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has opted to bench captain William Troost-Ekong for Nigeria’s pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

The 32-year-old center-back, who was the earliest arrival at camp for the double-header, makes way for 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick.

This will be only the second national team appearance for the FCV Dender EH defender, who now teams up with Calvin Bassey at the heart of Nigeria’s defense.

According to the confirmed lineup, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi will wear the captain’s armband in Troost-Ekong’s absence.

The starting XI features a formidable attacking trio, with Ademola Lookman joining in-form stars Victor Osimhen and Moses Simon.

Lookman’s inclusion comes despite the winger being sidelined at his club, Atalanta, without any appearances this season.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has recovered from a minor injury to reclaim his starting spot. The midfield trio consists of Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, and stand-in captain Ndidi.

The Super Eagles, currently sitting in a disappointing fourth place in Group A with seven points from six matches, face a do-or-die situation.

A win is imperative against Rwanda’s Amavubi to keep their 2026 World Cup qualification dreams alive.

The crucial match begins at 5pm at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Super Eagles Starting XI: Stanley Nwabali, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Benjamin Fredrick, Bruno Onyemaechi; Wilfred Ndidi (C), Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka; Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen.
