In an exciting development ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has unveiled an invigorating international exhibition tour across the United States for the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.
D’Tigress is set to face elite WNBA squads in high-stakes matchups across three prominent U.S. cities, as disclosed in an official statement by the federation.
The action-packed tour kicks off in San Diego on Saturday, April 25, 2026, where D’Tigress will challenge the Los Angeles Sparks. Their journey continues with a thrilling clash against the Minnesota Lynx in Kansas City on April 27, followed by a final showdown with the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis on May 2.
The NBBF asserts that these exhibitions are pivotal for the squad, serving as both a proving ground against world-class talent and a testament to their commitment to building a globally competitive roster.
“This campaign transcends mere preparation; it’s a declaration of ambition,” stated NBBF President Amadu Musa Kida, who also serves as Chairman of NNPCL, Nigeria’s national oil company. “While D’Tigress continues to dominate Africa, our vision extends far beyond continental success,” he added, reinforcing the team’s World Cup aspirations.
Head coach Rena Wakama highlighted the transformative potential of these matches: “Engaging with WNBA-caliber opponents accelerates our tactical evolution and fosters the cohesion necessary for international triumph.”
Ugo Udezue, Chairman of the NBBF’s Sponsorship Committee, further emphasized the tour’s branding benefits, noting its role in elevating D’Tigress’s global profile while connecting with the Nigerian diaspora.
Strategic collaborations with leading partners like Flutterwave and XE Jet will bolster the tour’s execution, providing cutting-edge digital solutions and logistical support.
