Nigerian comedian and social media personality Ekene Clinton Egbuna, popularly known as KlintonCOD, has stirred fresh outrage online after sharing a video with Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea, who oversaw the contentious AFCON semi-final clash between Nigeria and Morocco.
The clip, uploaded on 𝕏 on Thursday, reignited tensions among Nigerian football supporters still frustrated by the Super Eagles’ heartbreaking elimination from the tournament.
The high-stakes semi-final ended goalless after extra time, with Morocco securing a 4-2 penalty shootout victory, sending Nigeria to the third-place playoff.
While the match was tightly contested, post-match debates centered on Laryea’s officiating, with many Nigerians alleging biased decisions favoring Morocco.
Even before the game, concerns arose over Laryea’s appointment, with some citing the historic Nigeria-Ghana rivalry and potential partiality.
These suspicions intensified during the match as several contentious calls went against Nigeria, deepening fan frustration.
A particularly controversial moment was the yellow card shown to Calvin Bassey, ruling him out of Nigeria’s next match due to suspension—a decision widely criticized as overly harsh.
Reports emerged that Laryea’s Instagram account was deactivated following a flood of backlash from aggrieved Nigerian fans.
Amid this heated atmosphere, KlintonCOD’s video featuring the referee further enraged social media users, with many interpreting it as dismissive of the national disappointment.
Critics flooded the comments, accusing the comedian of insensitivity. One user, @Ronmaris_, wrote: “You’re a shameless ass kisser. You can’t even tell him he did a terrible job to his face.”
Another, @Urchpupi, added: “You betrayed 200 million Nigerians… not a true patriot.”
