Renowned Nollywood actor and filmmaker Deyemi Okanlawon has claimed that unskilled individuals often achieve greater success in Nigeria than those who uphold professional standards.
During a candid discussion on the Dear Ife podcast, Okanlawon criticized Nigeria’s culture of celebrating subpar performance while sidelining genuine talent and dedication.
He warned that maintaining high professional standards in Nigeria can be counterproductive, potentially stalling career growth and recognition.
“Excessive professionalism doesn’t thrive here—I’ve been mocked for taking my craft too seriously in a system that rewards half-hearted efforts,” he revealed.
“Ironically, those who approach their work with the least diligence often rise the fastest.”
Okanlawon concluded, “To navigate Nigeria’s landscape, you must deliberately suppress your competence—it’s the unfortunate reality we face.”
