Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has vowed to thoroughly examine all serious claims of child mistreatment or inappropriate behavior in daycare facilities across the country.
This response follows renewed online debates sparked by old social media posts from singer Simi about her experiences assisting at her mother’s daycare between 2012 and 2013.
The discussions resurfaced after Simi made comments condemning rape culture, prompting some netizens to revisit past tweets that had raised eyebrows years earlier.
While certain individuals deemed her childhood anecdotes concerning, others defended them as innocent reflections of daily interactions in a childcare environment.
The recording artist clarified that her now-deleted tweets simply described her 23-year-old self’s playful engagement with children before her music career took off, emphasizing they were never meant to be sinister.
Despite her explanation, persistent calls emerged for official scrutiny of daycare operations nationwide.
Addressing these concerns, NAPTIP released an official statement on Tuesday reaffirming its dedication to probing all substantiated allegations involving child welfare in care centers.
The anti-trafficking body urged whistleblowers or affected parties to confidentially submit information through its X account or official email address at [email protected].
NAPTIP’s notice read: “In light of ongoing public discourse regarding potential child safety violations in Nigerian daycare establishments, we assure comprehensive investigation of all credible claims.
“We appeal to individuals with direct knowledge, supporting evidence, or relevant personal experiences to confidentially contact our office via direct messages or email at [email protected]“
