Afrobeats icon Davido has opened up about his family’s long-standing tradition of pursuing overseas education, tracing it back to his grandfather’s generation.
In a viral interview, the award-winning artist shared that his grandfather prioritized international education, sending his children—including Davido’s father—to study in the United States.
Davido recalled that his father attended the University of Kentucky, emphasizing how this academic legacy has been upheld within his family for years.
He elaborated that his grandfather, a former senator, ensured his children received top-tier education abroad, reinforcing the family’s commitment to global exposure.
The singer highlighted that this practice is not uncommon among Nigeria’s elite, but his family’s deep-rooted educational ties set them apart.
Davido also touched on his diverse heritage, mentioning his parents’ London meeting and revealing his mother’s Edo roots alongside his Yoruba father’s lineage, which includes Igbo ancestry through his grandmother.
He added that his mother later earned a master’s degree in the U.S., further cementing the family’s transatlantic connections.
Sharing insights into his upbringing, Davido credited his time split between Nigeria and America for broadening his perspective, which he believes significantly influenced his music career and global appeal.
