Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has opened up about her bold move to secure a deal with Mavin Records, confessing she fearlessly approached Don Jazzy for a second chance after her initial rejection during the Mo’Hits days.

During her chat with Afrobeats Intelligence, the superstar revealed she made an unapologetic pitch to join Mavin Records right after its formation, calling it a “no-shame” moment that showcased her relentless drive.

The songstress contrasted the cold business approach of typical labels with the warm, family-like atmosphere she experienced at Mavin, where personal and professional support blended seamlessly.

Tiwa Savage recalled: “When Don Jazzy launched Mavin, I marched straight to him and said ‘Will you sign me now? You passed on me during Mo’Hits, but this is your new chapter.’ His response? ‘You know what? I don’t have a leading lady yet.’

“I doubled down. Absolutely. No hesitation. Zero shame in my game. People were shocked I asked again, but that’s how badly I wanted it. And just like that, Jazzy said yes.

“Looking back at my Mavin journey, I’ve learned labels aren’t just business partners – they become family. It took leaving to truly appreciate that bond.

“Even now, if drama hits, you’ll find me in Jazzy’s room with Sid, Tega, Reekado – all of us piled together working through it. Tears, laughter, everything.

“Regular labels? They couldn’t care less about your personal storms. Try walking into Empire’s office for a heart-to-heart? Forget it. That Mavin magic? Irreplaceable.”
