Nigeria’s triumphant D’Tigress basketball team has finally been rewarded with the $100,000 cash prize pledged by President Tinubu following their dominant victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket championship.
The president had announced the incentives during a ceremony honoring the athletes at his official residence last year, promising not only the monetary reward but also three-bedroom homes and national honors for each team member.
True to his word, the government has fulfilled all commitments, with players receiving the Naira equivalent of $100,000, while officials were granted $50,000 each.
The housing units and national honors were also delivered without delay, marking the first time a Nigerian administration has fully honored presidential sports incentives within 12 months.
President Tinubu emphasized that every step followed due process, reinforcing his administration’s principle that “commitments must translate into action.”
Similar rewards for the Super Falcons are nearing completion, while the Super Eagles have already received their allocated benefits.
Basketball Federation officials praised the coordinated efforts of the sports commission and finance ministry in facilitating the prompt disbursement.
Team captain expressed the squad’s deep appreciation, noting that the president’s swift action reflects a new era of genuine support for Nigerian athletes.
This historic achievement cements D’Tigress’ legacy as continental powerhouses, having secured their seventh title and fifth straight Afrobasket trophy after overpowering Mali in the championship clash.
Today marks the full fulfillment of our pledge to Nigeria’s basketball heroines.
