Belgian shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois has announced his temporary departure from international football.
The veteran Real Madrid keeper, 34, confirmed he’ll skip Belgium’s Nations League fixtures but plans to return for Euro 2028 qualifying matches.
Courtois last represented Belgium during their World Cup campaign, capping off his 115-cap international career for now.
His absence will be felt when Belgium faces Italy in their Nations League opener on September 25.
The decision follows talks with new national team manager Mark Van Bommel, who couldn’t promise Courtois the starting role.
In an interview with Belgian media, Courtois revealed he opted out of the Nations League schedule entirely.
The goalkeeper stated he’d only consider an early return if injuries force the coach to recall him.
Looking ahead, Courtois expressed his determination to reclaim the number one jersey for Euro qualifiers, vowing to demonstrate his worth through strong performances.
He acknowledged that strong showings from rival keepers during his hiatus could complicate his return.
Van Bommel will now evaluate alternative options including United’s young keeper Senne Lammens and Chelsea prospect Mike Penders.
