A Lagos Magistrate Court has authorized dual DNA examinations for Liam Aloba, the infant son of deceased musician Ilerioluwa Aloba (known professionally as Mohbad), following a petition by the artist’s father.
Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga of the Ikorodu court issued the ruling on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in response to Joseph Aloba’s legal request to establish paternity.
Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, the late singer’s widow, was named as respondent in the case filed under Lagos State’s Family Court regulations.
The court application sought authorization to obtain biological specimens from Mohbad’s remains at Yaba Military Hospital for comparative genetic analysis, either locally or at internationally accredited laboratories.
Additionally, the petition requested court approval for parallel testing at a foreign facility, with all expenses to be covered by the applicant.
Legal documents emphasized that resolving paternity uncertainties was crucial for determining child support responsibilities and safeguarding the boy’s future interests.
During proceedings, Augustine Adegbemi of Dr. Wahab Shittu’s legal team represented the petitioner, while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for the respondent. The unopposed motion resulted in magistrate approval.
Judicial instructions mandated that sample collection occur at certified medical institutions in Nigeria and overseas, with all parties or designated representatives present during the procedure.
The case was postponed until November 11, 2025, for subsequent hearings regarding the test outcomes.
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, from complications following an arm injury. Initial medical intervention by a private nurse at his Lekki residence preceded the artist’s fatal convulsions and subsequent burial within 24 hours.
Public pressure prompted Lagos authorities to order exhumation on September 21, 2023, for forensic examination. April 2024 autopsy results proved inconclusive due to advanced tissue decomposition.
At the family’s insistence, coroners authorized additional forensic investigation in June 2024 to reevaluate the circumstances surrounding the musician’s untimely death.
