John Terry

Chelsea icon John Terry has opened up about the emotional turmoil he endured following his heartbreaking penalty miss in the 2008 Champions League final, confessing that the pain drove him to dark thoughts of self-harm.

The ex-England captain lost his footing during the crucial spot-kick against Manchester United, sending his shot crashing against the post before the Red Devils clinched victory in the shootout at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

Terry, now 45, revealed that in the depths of despair, he stood on the 25th floor of the team hotel, staring out the window, overwhelmed by anguish—until teammates intervened.

During an emotional conversation on Reece Mennie’s podcast, he shared: ‘Looking back, I wish I’d had someone to talk to right then. I remember being alone in that hotel room, gazing down from the 25th floor, just repeating, “Why? Why?”

‘I’m not saying I would have acted on it, but in that moment, your mind races with unbearable thoughts.’

‘The lads came up and pulled me away. Those are the moments when you question everything—you never know how things might have turned out.’

He continued: ‘Days later, we regrouped with England, and there I was, sitting across from United’s players at breakfast—absolute torture.’

‘Then, in a friendly against the USA at Wembley, I scored a rare header from outside the box. All I could think was, “Why couldn’t that have been the moment instead?”

‘Even now, it haunts me. Time has dulled the pain, but as a player, you bury it under the grind of matches. Now that I’m retired, without that distraction, it hits harder. I still wake up at night reliving it—that wound never fully heals.’

In 2012, Chelsea finally conquered Europe by defeating Bayern Munich on penalties, but Terry watched from the sidelines due to a suspension from the semi-final against Barcelona—adding another layer of bittersweet redemption to his story.
