Following a turbulent period that saw Liam Rosenior’s sudden exit, Chelsea’s caretaker boss Calum McFarlane insisted on Friday that the squad remains confident in turning their fortunes around.
The Blues are set to face Leeds in an FA Cup semi-final clash this Sunday, hoping to salvage pride after a dismal run of five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring.
Rosenior’s brief 106-day reign came to an abrupt end after Chelsea’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Brighton, prompting the board to take swift action.
McFarlane, who previously stepped in after Enzo Maresca’s departure earlier this year, spoke to the press for the first time since Rosenior’s dismissal.
In an awkward twist, Chelsea’s official website briefly displayed a promotional image of Rosenior with the caption, “Watch Liam Rosenior’s press conference live!” moments before his sacking was confirmed.
When pressed about the reported friction between Rosenior and the squad, McFarlane remained tight-lipped.
“Who can say for certain?” he responded when asked if player discontent contributed to Rosenior’s downfall. “That’s not something I’d speculate on.”
Despite Chelsea’s alarming slump—losing seven of their last eight matches—McFarlane struck an optimistic tone.
“We’ve shown flashes of brilliance against top opposition this season,” he said. “The quality in this squad is undeniable. Some of these players are world-class, and we firmly believe we can turn things around.”
In a further blow, McFarlane confirmed that Brazilian winger Estevao will miss the rest of the campaign due to injury, casting doubt on his World Cup availability.
“Estevao won’t feature again this season,” he revealed. “It’s a tough setback for such a promising young talent, but we’ll support him through his recovery.”
