Nollywood star Bolaji Ogunmola has publicly apologized after facing backlash over a controversial scene in one of her movies featuring offensive remarks about Yoruba women. The resurfaced clip, which ignited outrage online, showed co-star IK Ogbonna making crude jokes about their hygiene, with Ogunmola’s character engaging in the exchange.

The viral scene triggered widespread condemnation, with viewers accusing the actress of perpetuating negative stereotypes. In response, Ogunmola clarified that the objectionable dialogue was unscripted—Ogbonna ad-libbed during filming, and she had little control over on-set improvisations.

Despite being the producer, she explained that creative decisions ultimately rested with the director, leaving her unable to intervene. “I didn’t write those lines—they were improvised. On set, the director’s vision takes priority,” she stated.

Her explanation, however, did little to appease critics, who demanded to know why producers retained the scene in the final cut.

In a heartfelt apology, Ogunmola revealed the toll of the backlash—receiving hostile messages threatening her career and safety, including attacks on her family and attempts to flag her YouTube channel. She emphasized that the film, shot years earlier, aimed to be a lighthearted comedy about cultural misunderstandings, ending with unity.

“These past days have been overwhelming—the insults and threats shook me,” she admitted. “As a proud Yoruba woman, I’d never endorse content demeaning my heritage. We wanted to showcase harmony, not division.”

Taking accountability, she apologized to the Yoruba community, acknowledging her failure as a producer to address the issue properly. “This was a learning experience. I own this mistake and vow to be more mindful moving forward.”
