Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi, the acclaimed Nigerian artist better known as Bella Shmurda, recently revealed the motivation behind his chart-topping track, ‘Cash App,’ which resonated deeply with internet fraudsters, also called Yahoo boys.
The smash hit, featuring Zlatan and Lincoln, took the music scene by storm in 2020, dominating airwaves across Nigeria and beyond.
In an exclusive chat with Clout Africa, Bella Shmurda shed light on the song’s creation, highlighting the hardships that come with cybercrime and why he chose to uplift those involved.
The singer shared that despite the controversial nature of their activities, these individuals deserve moments of joy amid their high-pressure lifestyles.
When quizzed about the song’s inspiration, the host asked, *”What led to ‘Cash App’? Were you involved in Yahoo?”*
Shmurda responded, “It’s about Yahoo in the way that these guys [fraudsters] need to unwind. They’re grinding hard, so why not give them a vibe? Online scams aren’t easy—they come with serious stress and risks.
He continued, *”Creativity doesn’t always need a background story. Sometimes, it just flows. ‘Cash App’ was a divine spark—pure and simple.”*
