Nigerian music star Waje has bravely opened up about becoming a mother at just 16, sharing the emotional turmoil she endured when the father of her child refused to acknowledge paternity.
During a candid interview on *The Honest Bunch*, the vocal powerhouse recounted concealing her pregnancy for nearly five months before her mother discovered the truth.
Waje revealed how her mother confronted the young man’s family, only to face shocking denial. “In Igbo tradition, an unmarried mother’s child belongs to her family,” Waje explained. “When he rejected responsibility, my mother simply declared, ‘Since you deny this child, she’s now mine.'”
Years later, the absent father unexpectedly reappeared, requesting reconciliation with his now-grown daughter. Though hesitant, Waje consented—but with strict stipulations regarding her daughter’s future. “As a Canadian resident, I insisted he legally establish paternity to secure her educational opportunities,” the singer shared.
The promised DNA test never materialized, despite years of empty assurances. “He kept postponing until the legal window closed when she turned eighteen,” Waje disclosed, her frustration palpable.
Now bearing sole financial responsibility for her university-bound daughter, Waje expressed her dismay: “After all those years of silence, offering minimal support when tuition costs thousands? We could’ve resolved this properly from the start.”
Through every challenge, Waje maintains that her unwavering priority remains providing her daughter with love, stability, and life-changing opportunities.
