Veteran defender Ashley Young, currently with Ipswich Town, has officially announced his retirement from professional football after an illustrious 23-year career. His final match could be this weekend’s fixture as he prepares to hang up his boots.
The 39-year-old took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling the iconic stadiums that defined his journey—from humble beginnings to Europe’s grandest stages.
“From Sefton Road to Old Trafford, the San Siro to Wembley, every moment has been unforgettable,” Young shared on his verified X account. “What a dream come true for that young boy who just wanted to play the game he loved.”
The ex-Manchester United and Inter Milan star hinted that Saturday’s match may mark the end of his storied career, writing, “All good things must come to an end. 23 years later… it’s time.”
“But this isn’t goodbye forever,” he teased cryptically.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from former clubs. Aston Villa, where Young made 250 appearances, hailed him as a modern-day legend: “Few have left a mark like Ashley. Wishing him all the best in his next chapter.”
Everton also celebrated his legacy, tweeting: “A true professional and an inspiration. Cheers, @youngy18, on an incredible career.”
