Argentina’s President Javier Milei has confirmed he will skip the World Cup 2026 final in the U.S., choosing to support his national team from the comfort of his official residence rather than traveling to the match.
In an interview with El Observador, Milei emphasized his unwavering commitment to his lucky pre-match routine, stating he would “never deviate” from his tradition of watching crucial games at home—a ritual he credits for Argentina’s successful run to the championship match.
The president also disclosed an unusual game-day superstition: sporting a thick YPF-branded jacket during every match, a habit that began when Argentina triumphed 3-1 over Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Milei recalled a pivotal moment during that match when removing the jacket coincided with Switzerland scoring, prompting him to immediately put it back on—a superstition he’s maintained ever since. The leader joked about his strict stance on energy conservation, saying he’d rather bundle up than turn on heating, even during intense matches.
The Albiceleste secured their spot in the highly anticipated final after a thrilling 2-1 victory against England on Wednesday.
While Milei prepares to cheer from Buenos Aires, Spain’s King Felipe VI and former U.S. President Donald Trump are confirmed attendees for the championship showdown in New Jersey.
