Boxing superstar Anthony Joshua may hang up his gloves for good after surviving a devastating car accident in Nigeria that took the lives of two key members of his training team, reveals his longtime promoter Eddie Hearn.

The Matchroom Sports chairman admitted Joshua’s boxing future hangs in the balance as the former unified heavyweight champion continues healing from both physical injuries and psychological wounds sustained in the December tragedy.

Joshua had traveled to his ancestral homeland following a dominant TKO victory over YouTube sensation Jake Paul. The celebratory homecoming turned catastrophic when his convoy collided with an abandoned truck on the notoriously dangerous Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025.

The fatal crash claimed the lives of Sina Ghami, Joshua’s performance coach who helped sculpt his championship physique, and MMA-trained striking plane Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele. Joshua miraculously survived the impact and underwent emergency treatment before flying back to Britain to mourn his fallen mentors.

During an emotional interview with First Round TV, Hearn revealed the uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s fighting future.

“There are absolutely no guarantees we’ll see AJ in the ring again, though knowing his warrior spirit, I believe he’ll return. This tragedy has changed him forever – he’ll carry Sina and Latz’s legacies forward however he chooses,” Hearn confessed.

Speaking more frankly than ever before, Hearn disclosed the crash caused devastating physical damage beyond what fans realized.

“The public hasn’t grasped the severity of his injuries – he’s been rebuilding himself from the ground up. While he’s begun light training, proper boxing preparation remains months away,” the promoter emphasized.

The accident derailed tentative plans for Joshua to fight in March, potentially setting up a British superfight against lineal champion Tyson Fury in late 2026. Fury prepares to end his own hiatus against Russian contender Arslanbek Makhmudov this spring.

“We had March circled for his return before potentially facing Fury. That timeline’s completely changed now. Whether that historic fight ever materializes – honestly, nobody knows,” Hearn concluded solemnly.
