Nigerian music sensation Joeboy has declared that Afrobeats is undergoing a transformative revival, emphasizing a shift away from diluted sounds toward authentic artistry.
During his electrifying sold-out Valentine’s Day concert in Lagos, the ‘Faji’ hitmaker shared his excitement about the genre’s resurgence, stating that Afrobeats is reclaiming its roots.
He boldly proclaimed, “Subpar music no longer has a foothold in today’s Afrobeats scene.”
“We’re witnessing a purification phase—a return to genuine musical expression without shortcuts or gimmicks,” Joeboy remarked.
“The energy is shifting, and I’m thrilled to see the spotlight returning to music that resonates deeply. It’s a blessing,” he added.
In the early 2020s, Afrobeats underwent a wave of experimentation, blending with Amapiano, hip-hop, and R&B—a trend that sparked debates about preserving the genre’s authenticity.
Critics argued that excessive genre-fusion, aimed at global appeal, had weakened Afrobeats’ core identity, prompting calls for a return to its traditional essence.
By 2024, a noticeable pivot emerged as Nigerian artists began prioritizing raw, unfiltered Afrobeats, minimizing Amapiano influences and reconnecting with the genre’s origins.
Music enthusiasts have applauded this resurgence, acknowledging that while the journey back to Afrobeats’ purest form may take time, the momentum is undeniably positive.
