Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about the practical considerations behind his marriage to fellow artist Simi, emphasizing that genetic compatibility played a pivotal role.

The Afrobeat star, who lives with sickle cell disease, confessed he wouldn’t have proceeded with the relationship if his wife carried the sickle cell trait or full genotype.

With personal experience of living with the SS genotype, the musician prioritized his future children’s health over emotions when evaluating his romantic future with Simi.

Gold explained that procreating with an AS or SS partner was non-negotiable for him, as he refused to risk passing on the painful genetic disorder to offspring.

During their early courtship, the performer immediately sought confirmation of Simi’s AA genotype status before emotionally investing in their bond.

The celebrity couple tied the knot in 2019 after confirming genetic compatibility and have since welcomed two healthy children together.

Having publicly embraced his sickle cell diagnosis, the musician has transformed into a leading voice for genetic disorder education in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
