Renowned Nollywood star and filmmaker, Azeezat Shorunmu, has shared a harrowing experience about permanently losing her voice while filming a project.

Fans had grown familiar with her original voice, but her tone is now distinctly different.

During a candid chat on Oyinmomo TV, Azeezat disclosed that she was overwhelmed with shock and grief upon learning of actress Surutu’s child’s passing—on the very morning production was set to begin.

Overcome by emotion, she let out a piercing scream that permanently damaged her vocal cords.

Despite seeking both medical and spiritual help to reclaim her voice, the actress revealed that it returned with a new, huskier tone—marking an unexpected shift in her identity.

“Everyone recognizes this isn’t my natural voice.

“It happened during the filming of ‘Apase.’ That same morning, we learned Mummy Surutu had lost her child.

“I was devastated and in shock. In my desperation, I screamed—and lost my voice in that moment.

“Throughout production, my throat remained shut. Usually, hoarseness fades quickly, but mine worsened over months.

“It was agony—wanting to speak but being powerless. I tried everything—prayers, oils, treatments.

“When sound finally returned, it wasn’t my voice anymore. Just this rough, fragile whisper,” she confessed.
