Renowned Nollywood star Olaniyi Afonja, popularly called Sanyeri, has shared heartfelt insights into his academic journey and the beginnings of his acting career.
The actor made these revelations during an exclusive chat on the acclaimed show Behind The Fame, broadcast on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
In the interview, Sanyeri reflected on his childhood perspective of schooling and how his understanding evolved through the years. He confessed that as a young boy, he saw education as an obligation for parents rather than a tool for personal growth. At the time, classrooms felt more like confinement than a place of opportunity.
Expressing deep remorse, the comic veteran acknowledged his past negligence toward academics but emphasized his current efforts to rectify it. He disclosed that he recently enrolled in further studies and is eagerly awaiting his results. According to him, age should never deter anyone from pursuing knowledge.
“As kids, we assumed education was our parents’ duty, blind to its impact on our futures,” he remarked. “I’ve since realized my mistake and taken steps to correct it—education has no expiration date.”
Shifting focus to his film career, the actor revealed that comedy was not his initial forte. Before captivating audiences with humor, he honed his craft in diverse roles under the guidance of two influential mentors—late Prince Oluseyi Adeoye and Hakeem Alimi Ajala Jalingo. Neither specialized in comedy, yet their tutelage laid the foundation for his success.
Sanyeri also unraveled the surprising origin of his stage name. Contrary to popular belief, it was originally adopted by fellow performer Dehinde before fate intervened. When the first “Sanyeri” fell ill during a performance, Afonja was thrust into the role—a twist of destiny that permanently linked him to the iconic moniker.
Beyond mere branding, the name carries ancestral significance, blending traditional praise with his artistic identity. Over time, the title became inseparable from his legacy in Nollywood.
