Reuben Abati

Ex-presidential spokesperson Reuben Abati has criticized rapper Nicki Minaj for using her upcoming United Nations speech to discuss alleged Christian persecution in Nigeria, calling it a bid for publicity.

Abati proposed that Nigeria counter the narrative by having Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage make a televised statement defending the nation during Minaj’s scheduled address.

The event, organized alongside US ambassador Mike Waltz, aims to bring global attention to claims of violence against Christians in Nigeria. Waltz announced the collaboration on social media, citing Minaj’s influence as a way to amplify the issue.

Minaj, previously vocal about her concerns over religious violence in Nigeria, thanked Waltz for the platform. Her speech is set for Tuesday in New York.

Abati dismissed the rapper’s involvement, remarking on Arise News: “Nicki Minaj is a musician from Trinidad and Tobago. She should stick to her ‘Anaconda’ hits and her Barbz fanbase rather than meddling in Nigerian affairs.”

He accused her of chasing relevance, despite being invited by US officials. “If influencers are the new battleground, we should deploy our own. When Minaj speaks, Nigeria should have Tiwa Savage go live to share her perspective on national television.”

Abati emphasized the need for homegrown voices to represent Nigeria’s stance rather than foreign figures. “This isn’t about clout—it’s about patriotism. Let Nigerian artists like Tiwa defend their country authentically.”
