Rapper A$AP Rocky recently opened up about his mother’s long-standing wish for him to be with global superstar Rihanna. He revealed that she once urged him to leave a past relationship in favor of pursuing the Fenty mogul, long before their romance blossomed.
During a candid conversation with The New York Times, the Harlem-born artist admitted that he initially saw Rihanna as just a friend. Reflecting on the timing of their relationship, he emphasized that neither was prepared for a serious commitment in earlier years.
“Rihanna’s always been the one for me—my mom saw it before I did,” Rocky shared. “She’d say, ‘I know you’re into this other girl, but Riri’s your match.’ I’d brush it off, but moms really do know best.”
He added, “Looking back, things unfolded perfectly. If we had gotten together sooner, it wouldn’t have worked. We both needed to grow first.”
The pair first bonded professionally when Rocky joined Rihanna’s 2013 Diamond Tour. Years later, romance rumors sparked after her split from ex-boyfriend Hassan Jameel in early 2020.
Before their love story began, Rocky briefly dated model Kendall Jenner, while Rihanna navigated high-profile relationships. Today, the power couple are proud parents, welcoming three children between 2022 and 2025.
