Renowned Nigerian Fuji maestro Wasiu Ayinde, widely celebrated as KWAM 1, has officially declared his interest in ascending the revered throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
The music icon formally announced his aspiration in a letter dated December 3, 2025, directed to the Fusengbuwa ruling house of Agunsebi Quarters, asserting his eligibility as a direct descendant of the Oba Jadiara lineage.
Highlighting his illustrious contributions, KWAM 1 referenced prestigious accolades such as his 2020 installation as Mayegun of Yorubaland, his 2023 recognition as Olori Omo-Oba and Otunba Afidipotemole of Akile Ijebu by the late Awujale, and his 2022 national honor as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
In his statement, he emphasized, “Otunba Wasiu Ayinde Adewale Olasunkanmi Omogbolahan Anifowoshe, MON, hereby formally notifies the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of my intention to be considered for the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland, strictly adhering to Ijebu customary law and Ogun State Chieftaincy regulations.
“Born on March 3, 1957, I am a proud descendant of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, tracing my heritage to the Oba Jadiara lineage. My five-decade dedication to preserving Ijebu, Yoruba, and Nigerian culture through music and cultural endeavors further strengthens my candidacy.”
Abdul Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, chairman of the ruling house, confirmed receipt of Ayinde’s letter, assuring stakeholders of a smooth succession process. He stated, “I urge our family members, both locally and internationally, to remain composed. Within hours of receiving Otunba Wasiu Ayinde’s letter, I issued a formal response, just as I have done with previous expressions of interest.
“By the grace of Allah, we anticipate a harmonious and joyous resolution to this sacred selection process in the coming weeks. Divine will shall guide us toward a peaceful and historic conclusion.”
