A Solemn Tribute in Lagos as Nollywood Honors Alexx Ekubo

A month after the tragic loss of beloved Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo to metastatic kidney cancer on May 11, the Nigerian film industry united in mourning. Stars like Funke Akindele, IK Ogbonna, and Ini Edo attended an emotional service of songs in Lagos, celebrating Ekubo’s enduring legacy.

IK Ogbonna moved attendees with a heartfelt tribute, his voice trembling as he recalled futile attempts to dial a number that would never answer. Ekubo’s children, displaying remarkable strength, led scripture readings that left few dry eyes in the gathering.

The ceremony balanced raw sorrow with tender humanity—from misplaced phones to gentle requests for privacy amid filming—painting a portrait of a man whose generosity touched countless lives.

Ekubo will be laid to rest on June 18 in his hometown of Abia State, where family and fans will bid their final farewells.
