A bedazzled sock once worn by pop icon Michael Jackson fetched an astonishing €7,688 (around US$8,000, £6,600, or N15 million) at auction.

The sale took place on July 30 in Nîmes, France, drawing global attention from collectors and fans alike.

This extraordinary piece of memorabilia, reportedly used during Jackson’s electrifying 1997 HIStory World Tour, was recovered by a backstage technician following the show.

Encased in a protective frame for nearly three decades, the sock’s initial estimated selling price was a modest €3,000–€4,000, but competitive bidding drove the figure much higher.

Now faded to a creamy hue with dulled rhinestones, the sock is believed to have played a role in Jackson’s legendary “Billie Jean” performance—synonymous with his groundbreaking moonwalk. Accompanying the sock in the auction was a vintage backstage pass saved by the technician who found the relic while breaking down stage equipment after the Nice concert.

Aurore Illy, the auctioneer, hailed the sock as a “holy grail” for Michael Jackson devotees, underlining its unmatched connection to pop culture history. Despite its aged condition, the sock’s provenance as a piece of the King of Pop’s legacy made it irresistibly valuable.

Jackson’s collectibles routinely achieve staggering sums—his famed 1983 moonwalk glove sold for US$350,000 to a Macau casino, while a fedora he famously tossed before his signature dance move commanded US$80,000 in Paris in 2023. A vintage Pepsi-ad leather jacket also fetched a staggering £250,000.

Even 15 years after his passing in 2009, Jackson’s mystique endures, with fans preserving his legend through cherished artifacts like this glittering sock.
